Tata launches Nano GenX with a host of features. Price starts at INR 1.99 lacs

Mumbai, 19 May 2015: After setting the benchmark for value with the original Nano and facing rough weather in between, Tata has now taken the spirit of innovation further by launching the all-new GenX Nano - a new compact, feature-rich hatchback tailor made for the smart young urban market. The GenX Nano will be available for sale, across the country in over 450 Tata Motors sales outlets, from today.

The GenX Nano comes at a starting price of INR 1.99 lacs for the XE variant and goes upto INR 2.49 lacs for the XT variant, in Manual Transmission. There are two other variants – XMA and XTA with ‘Easy Shift’ Automated Manual Transmission. The XMA variant will be made-to-order and available for sale from August 2015. The XMA variant is priced at INR. 2.69 Lakhs and the top-end, XTA variant is priced at INR 2.89 Lakhs and will be available post the national launch. All prices are Ex-showroom, Delhi.

The GenX Nano is a smart and nifty little city car to drive about and the cheapest automatic transmission vehicle in the market. And it comes with a host of modifications inside out that make it better and stronger. Design changes include an infinity themed grille that grins widely at you and makes the car look like one big emoticon from the front. Then there are smoked headlamps, a signature steering wheel without multi function controls, integrated tailgate spoiler and a high ground clearance of 180 mm, which gives it a semblance of respectability while waiting at the signals.

Enhanced driving pleasure comes with the Easy Shift AMT which also has the option of a 'Sport' Mode. Now you have to be a real driving enthusiast to engage 'Sport' mode in a vehicle that is powered by a 624cc 2-cylinder gasoline engine, and produces 38PS power @5500 RPM and 51Nm torque @4000 RPM!

Amongst other features, the most notable is a 'creep' feature, which helps the car to crawl as soon as the pressure is eased off the brake pedal, without pressing the accelerator (I wish they had a more imaginative name for that). Other highlights aimed at impressing the young urban first time car buyer include the power steering, the Hatch access, Bluetooth connectivity, four speaker surround sound system, and a Digital Information Display that shows Average & Instantaneous Fuel Consumption, Distance to Empty, Gear Shift Indicator, and more.

Overall, the new GenX Nano is a smart, stylish, efficient and practical city car with a 24 litre fuel tank and a 110 litre boot. The vehicle claims a mileage of 25.3 km/l for the manual variants and 21.9 km/l for the AMT variants. There are some enhanced safety features like the crumple zone, intrusion beams and anti-roll bar, but misses out on front airbags.

After Zest and Bolt, the GenX Nano is the third offering from Tata in quick succession, and this one was conceived around two years back, incorporating a lot of feedback from existing and potential consumers. For Tata's sake, I hope it works out for them this time around.
