Compact Modular Architecture (CMA): the platform for Volvo Cars' new global compact car range

New Delhi, 15 October 2015: After the acclaimed Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), Volvo Cars will now build its range of compact cars on the Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) - a smaller but equally advanced version of its predecessor. The company’s first car on the CMA platform is expected to be launched in 2017. Thereafter, all future Volvo cars will be built on just two fully scalable and wholly modular vehicle architectures.

SPA and CMA will be the cornerstone of Volvo’s product renewal and growth strategy, which involves the replacement of every single car in its line-up in the next four years and an annual sales volume of upto 800,000 cars. The 2015 XC90 was the first in line and will be soon followed by the new S90 premium sedan.

CMA will introduce premium engineering of larger cars into the compact segment. Imagine Volvo’s next generation of compact cars with the same advanced technologies available in the XC90 today. Shared technology between SPA and CMA will include powertrains (both conventional and new plug-in hybrid variants), infotainment, climate and data network and safety systems. It will allow a wide range of cars, powertrains, electrical systems and technologies of varying complexity to be fitted on the same architecture, generating significant economies of scale and a more streamlined manufacturing process. CMA has also been designed to embrace electrification, offering a new Twin Engine plug-in hybrid variant designed especially for the new architecture.

Volvo Cars expects a significant increase in its global volumes with the coming range of CMA-based cars, and move closer to its stated vision of "no deaths or injuries in its new cars by 2020".
