Rexton. Reva. Respect: Mahindra's recipe for the rest of 2012

17 October 2012: Till now, 2012 has been a good year of sorts for Mahindra & Mahindra. They dislodged the Tatas from the No.3 slot in the passenger vehicle segment for the first time this year, and have consistently posted strong results in an otherwise dull market. The impressive sales of the XUV500 have contributed hugely towards this effort, and the recently launched Quanto has also shored up some strong numbers. With the year almost coming to an end, they are not done yet. Today the much awaited Rexton has been unveiled and this is Mahindra's first launch in collaboration with Ssangyong Motors. This will be closely followed by their all new restyled electric car, the Reva NXR.

There is a new found respect for Mahindra in the industry today and it will only get stronger with these two products; as one demonstrates their capability as a global player, and the other is a step into the future of energy efficient automobile technology.

The Mahindra Ssangyong Rexton
The Rexton was first seen at the Delhi Auto Expo in January this year, and got a fairly promising response. It is a full size SUV which will take on the Toyota Fortuner and Chevrolet Captiva on the roads. The car has a muscular and more contemporary stance when compared to its rivals, is well styled, and packed with features like ABS, EBD, airbags, reverse parking assist, projector headlamps and many more goodies. It is powered by a 2.7 litre diesel engine with an output of 165 bhp and 340 Nm of torque. Up against strong established rivals, pricing would be key to its success and as usual, Mahindra has been very aggressive on this front and priced the RX5 MT (2WD) at Rs.17.67 lakh and RX7 AT (AWD) at Rs.19.67 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai).

The Reva NXR
The Reva NXR is an extremely important car for Mahindra, for India and for the world. It may just be the future of the small car as we know it. Unlike its predecessor the NXR is a four seater, which makes it a rival to all small hatchbacks in India. According to the company, the NXR demands only a 15-20% premium over the small hatchbacks in the market. It has extremely low running costs of about 50-60 paise per km, which is a bargain when you compare it with the Rs.3-4/ km for diesel and Rs.5-6/ km for petrol cars. It is extremely contemporary in its styling and I have a feeling that it’s practicality and affordability may just surprise the market. I seriously hope that the Reva NXR becomes a success, as the world deserves energy efficient vehicles in larger numbers. This one for me would rank right at the top, amongst the most important launches of the year.
