A S-Class Apart: The All New S63 AMG

22 July 2013: The Mercedes S-Class has always been thought of as a peek into the future. What the S-Class has today, your everyday car will have ten years down the line. Infrared night vision, ABS and airbags are just a few things that the S-Class pioneered. Although its history dates back six decades, it remains a symbol of innovation, design and luxury; and the quintessential luxury badge for the modern entrepreneur.

The only thing that remained to be explored in the S-Class was maniacal power. And Mercedes has now conquered that frontier too by revealing the AMG Performance version of the newly launched S-Class. It looks refreshing with a few design cues from the two-door CL and a more fluid language overall. The LED headlamps give it an imposing look, although it is not meant to be so. This is more of a soothing, gentle giant.

The interiors are the usual Benz affair with acres of leather, wood and carbon fiber and some very clever features. The seats are covered in exclusive Nappa leather and there is a sporty two-spoke wheel. It has everything you need in safety and comfort, with the Intelligent Drive which includes Parking Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Night View Assist and much more. It also has a prominent IWC Analog Clock and a TFT screen with pre installed AMG specific programs.

The most powerful S-Class ever, the S63 AMG comes with a monstrous 5.5 liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which develops a whopping 585 bhp and 664 nm of torque. A speed of 100 km/h comes up in 4 seconds flat, and the top speed is an electronically limited to 250 km/h (155 mph). A special upgrade increases it to 300 km/h (186 mph).

The new S-Class is lighter than before, thanks to liberal use of aluminum, a lighter battery, a carbon fiber spare wheel housing and 19-inch forged aluminium alloy wheels. The power is sent to all four wheels via a seven speed transmission, thanks to the 4-MATIC all wheel drive system. A rear wheel drive option is also available. Visually, the distinctive features which mark the S63 include large air intakes in the front, an aggressive splitter and a rear diffuser with quad-exhausts.

Prices have not yet been released. Look out for the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show where the all new S63 AMG will make its debut worldwide.
